Code of Ethics

1. BE PREPARED:

A. I will create a safe environment for readings that is private, welcoming, and cheerful.

B. I will arrive before the appointed time, and be responsible for ending in a timely fashion.

C. I will dress professionally, and maintain good grooming.

D. Acknowledging the sacredness of the Tarot, I will begin each reading with personal grounding, request for spiritual guidance, and prayer for the outcome to be in the highest and best interest of the client.

2. FIRST DO NO HARM:

A. My first concern is for the welfare of my clients, and I will do everything in my ability to empower, empower, empower.

B. I will educate clients about the strengths and limitations of a Tarot reading.

C. I will teach clients that their answers lie within, and that, although the Tarot can help them access their own inner wisdom, they must never allow it to take away their free will. All decisions are the right and responsibility of the seeker.

D. I will tell the truth in such a way that the client can easily take responsibility for his or her future actions by knowing that there are always options, and I will assist the querent in identifying those options when and if appropriate.

E. I will not edit information that comes from the Divine through the cards, but will seek to word that information in a way that is empowering for the client.

F. I will suggest tape recording the reading so that the client’s memory of the reading will be consistent with what was actually said.

3. SHOW RESPECT:

A. I will never exploit relationships with clients for personal gain or financial advantage.

B. I will respect the moral, religious and social beliefs of the client, and refrain from imposing my beliefs on clients.

C. I will actively listen to the querent without interruption.

D. I will refrain from judgment and criticism.

E. I will recognize the boundaries and limitations of my competence and will refer clients to appropriate professionals when necessary. I will keep a list of doctors, lawyers, therapists, financial consultants, 12 step programs, and other resources so they are readily available when needed.

F. I will never make a physical, or mental health diagnoses.

4. KEEP CONFIDENTIALITY:

A. I will hold in confidence all information obtained in the course of a reading, revealing information obtained during that reading only under the following circumstances: after obtaining the written consent of the client, where there is clear and imminent danger to the client or others, with identity disguised when discussing case material with mentors for the purpose of consultation, and education.

B. I will provide information only about the seeker, never about other people in the seeker’s life, including family members.

5. PARTICIPATE IN CONTINUING EDUCATION:

A. I am committed to increasing my knowledge of the Tarot by participation in regular continuing education events and conferences.

B. I will inform clients that cases are shared with my mentor on a regular basis, and that identity is kept confidential.

6. FINANCIAL CONCERNS

A. I will accept reasonable fees for services – understanding that people learn and heal faster when they invest in their own process.

B. I will consider “pro bono” work in cases of need.

C. I will not lend money to clients, nor will I barter my services.

7. ADHERE TO THE STANDARDS SET FORTH BY THE ATA:

I will, at all times, endeavor to adhere to the standards set forth by the ATA, including the ATA Code of Ethics.

 

American Tarot Association Code of Ethics

  1. I will serve the best interest of my clients, conducting my professional activities without causing or intending to cause harm.
  2. I will treat all my clients with equal respect, regardless of their origin, race, religion, gender, age, or sexual preference.
  3. I will represent honestly my Tarot qualifications, including educational credentials, levels of certification, and experience.
  4. I will keep confidential the names of clients and all information shared or discussed during readings, unless otherwise requested by the client or required by a court of law.
  5. I will recommend clients consult a licensed professional for advice of legal, financial, medical, or psychological nature that I am not quaified to provide. If trained in one of these areas, I will clearly differentiate between the Tarot reading and any professional advice additionally provided.
  6. I will discuss and agree upon all fees (if any) with my clients in advance should a client wish to proceed beyond the orginally agreed arrangement, all additional fees (if any) will be discussed and agreed upon by both parties before proceeding.
  7. I will respect my clients’ right to refuse or terminate their reading at any time, regardless of prior consent.
  8. I recognize that all ATA members have the same rights and obligations, and I will always respect and honor my co-members.
